I have never reviewed a product on amazon but this machine is awful!! I had one that broke and foolishly spent the money again to replace it thinking I had a lemon. Guess what, same thing happened AGAIN! Do not buy it. It will work great for 5 months and then will freeze up and give a message that no one at customer service can help with. Awful.

The Pixma MP490 – if you are looking for a low priced, multi-purpose printer this is it. Print quality is very acceptible, scan resolution is also. Most Canon printers rely on separate color/black toner cartridges which is my preference, but, this one does not – it only uses a color cartridge and a black cartridge – but it is a worthwhile compromise as is the lack of true photo quality print resolution – although the print quality is fine for general use.

To have a multi-purpose quality printer for $50 is perfect – if you want true photo quality, though, you will need to spend twice as much.

Very economical easy to operate printer. Print quality is good for having only two ink tanks. Very good for printing 4×6 photos.

This is a terrific printer for the price. Very clear images and so easy to use. Set-up was a snap. It is a tad noisy, but for small jobs is great.

I haven’t really had any problems so far.
The fast ink consumption is a con, but unless you’re planning on using this for quality photo printing, you just have to be wary to print your documents on draft quality and the ink will usually last a while.
Starting up the printer can be a pain. It’s slow, loud, and you start to wonder when the thing is going to start printing.
The SD card reader is a plus since you can print your digital photos all from the printer without having to go to your computer. It also helps for my micro SD card I use for my camera phone: I don’t have an SD card reader on my computer so I use a SD card adapter for micro SD cards on the printer SD card reader to load all my camera phone pictures to my computer without having to get a connection cable for my phone.
Scanner quality is pretty good too. (and you can’t beat the price…)
