So I was at school one day and forgot my engineering pad, so I went to the bookstore and bought a 50 page Ampad, for whatever reason at the bookstore the sell 50 sheet Ampad pads and 200 Sheet Roaring Spring pads, which is what I normally used. I was shocked that I could ever be so disappointed in something as trivial as a pad of paper. The grids on each page didn’t line up, so it’s not as crisp to write on. Also, the box in the upper right hand corner is pretty narrow, this is normally were the page number is written, and I felt it was too cramped to neatly write the page number in sizable numbers. Super disappointed.

I got exactly what I was expecting. If you want an engineer pad, this is a good product.

I bought some Ampad blocks to take notes during some of my masters degree classes and I found them very helpful. Paper quality is good for note taking as long as you write with either pencil or ballpoint. The paper is not fit though, if you are going to write with a fountain pen. For that I would recommend a Rhodia notebook. All in all, Ampad notebooks and paper block have been used by many students and professors in the US and everywhere else and they fulfill their mission with high marks. I would highly recommend them. If you are in the US the ruled paper being 1/5 of an inch will help you draw to scale some of your graphics. For those who are outside the States, the graphic rule will still help you draw with some proportion and scale.

Ok, if you’re an engineer, you’ve seen this paper or something like it. It’s ruled on the back side with a subtle green grid, but not on the front so it’s not distracting. I find it hard to believe that it needs to be this expensive, but I’ve never seen it for much less than 5 cents per page. I think it’s worth it, though. Too bad Amazon doesn’t sell it, I’d throw a pad in the cart when I bought something else.

Writes well with pen or pencil (I use a HB lead in mechanical pencils) and erases cleanly with the plastic-type erasers (Staedtler or equivalent). Great for diagrams and problem sets. A little on the expensive side.
