Hundreds of educators prepare to strike in west Contra Costa County
22+ min ago (384+ words) Hundreds of educators in west Contra Costa County are expected to hit the picket lines Thursday. Velena Jones reports. About 1,400 educators are expected to picket outside dozens of West Contra Costa Unified schools on Thursday. Union members have been preparing posters all week, focusing on pay, staffing, and student services. "We have been trying to sound the alarm for years but not to really avail, so this is our last resort," said Gabrielle Micheletti, Vice-President of United Teachers of Richmond. After 10 months of negotiations, the district and the union remain at an impasse. The union wants a 10% raise over two years, funded healthcare, and smaller class sizes. The district's counter: a 3% raise and increased health benefits. Union leaders say low pay has already created recruitment and retention issues, claiming 71 district classrooms started the year without teachers and a lack of…...

Minister Pradhan reiterated that the Centre is fully prepared to release all pending educational funds, provided the state "adopts an open-minded approach" and prioritises the welfare of students over political compulsions. Prasad said the Chief Minister must give the people of Tamil Nadu a transparent and accountable explanation, especially in light of the Minister's observations. He urged CM Stalin to "rise above partisanship" and address the concerns surrounding the blocking of NEP components that can enhance student skills, expand opportunities, and modernise the state's education ecosystem. According to Prasad, Tamil Nadu's refusal to sign the required Memorandum of Understanding has stalled the rollout of JNVs and the PM-SHRI Scheme,…...

Schools to teach about endometriosis, periods and cancer screenings
39+ min ago (887+ words) Young women say they were taught how to open a bank account in school, but not how to change a tampon or spot signs of cancer. "As a person from an ethnic minority background, in some communities it's actually taboo and quite a sensitive topic to talk about, so if you're not able to learn about these things in school, then where do you learn?" said 23-year-old Athika Ahmed. She was among the young people across Wales involved in the design of new school resources to increase understanding of the most common women's health conditions. Leaflets and posters will be available to secondary schools covering menstrual health, endometriosis, pelvic health and menopause. Prince William School Board considers longer teacher workdays
40+ min ago (346+ words) The Prince William County School Board is expected to vote Wednesday night whether to increase the teacher workday by 30 minutes without any adjustment to compensation. The change would impact every public school teacher in the county, extending their shifts from seven hours to seven-and-a-half hours. "Adding 30 minutes to the teacher workday without additional pay is, in effect, a pay cut," said one teacher testified at a School Board meeting the week before Thanksgiving. The proposal has drawn the attention and opposition from the statewide education association that represents K-12 educators. "There's not another profession that would take a 30-minute adjustment to workday without additional compensation," said Carol Bauer of the Virginia Education Association. "So, that's something that should be considered. No other profession would accept this without corresponding pay increase." Some on the school board disagree. There are only two school…...

54+ min ago (530+ words) The editors of Nineteen Fifty-Six and Alice magazines were informed Monday that the university was stopping the magazines immediately. A university official cited July guidance from Attorney General Pamela Bondi on what the Trump administration considered unlawful discrimination at institutions that receive federal funding, according to one of the editors. The move comes as college campuses across the United States react to President Donald Trump's push to end diversity, equity and inclusion practices on college campuses. The university decision to shutter the magazines appears based on the fact that the publications had primary target audiences, although neither magazine limited who could work on staff. Alice editor-in-chief Gabrielle Gunter said she was shocked and heartbroken about the decision. The magazine had just marked its 10th anniversary. "It was pretty dumbfounding. I was under the impression that we were protected by freedom of…...
